So, how do you solve this? The first option your team brings to the table is something called over sleeving. Now, um, over sleeving allows shrink sleeves to be applied over an existing printed or sleeved aluminum can. It sounds like an elegant, fast fix.

A local printer tells you they can deliver four hundred thousand custom, three hundred sixty degree digital shrink sleeves in just five days. The cost? Fifteen cents per sleeve, plus an eight cent per can copacker application fee. That is a total of twenty three cents per can.

Under Section fourteen point two of your Master Supply Agreement, the can supplier's liability for printing errors is capped at just five cents per defective empty can. But at least you make the launch, right? Well, not so fast.

Physical Failure Modes and the Shelf Life Truth

So, we look at Option Two. We scrap all four hundred thousand mislabeled cans. We sell them back to recoup a minor four thousand dollar aluminum scrap rebate. Then, we buy four hundred thousand plain brite cans on the spot market for eighteen cents each.

Since these are going into retail coolers, standard paper labels will dissolve under the condensation. You have to use premium, waterproof Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene, or BOPP, adhesive labels. This costs twelve cents per can for materials and application.

Here is the catch with Option Two. Your copacker's inline adhesive labeler is slow. It maxes out at just one hundred twenty cans per minute. To process four hundred thousand cans, you need eleven continuous days of production. That eats your logistical transit buffer down to a razor thin twenty four hours before the Target deadline.

Even with that timeline bottleneck, Option Two is the clear choice. Why? Because a late shipment penalty is a reversible financial pinch. You can negotiate, you can pay a fee, you can recover. But black mold growing under a sleeve? That is a terminal brand killer.
